We are very sorry to report that Allen Staley, professor emeritus of art history at Columbia, has died aged 88. We send our condolences to Professor Staley's family.
Professor Staley was a longstanding member of The Walpole Society's Consultative Committee, and a member of the Society for four decades. Professor Staley became a key figure in the revival of interest in the Pre-Raphaelite movement after the publication of his The Pre-Raphaelite Landscape in 1973. Professor Staley's catalogue of Benjamin West, based on the researches of Helmut von Erffa, was published in 1986, and his last major study, Copley and West in England, 1775-1815, appeared in 2021.
